THE PROBLEM: One-man or one-woman businesses (owner-led businesses) have mostly earned themselves a negative brand within the talent market. This negative branding makes it difficult for them to attract, maximise and retain quality talent. This affects their ability to build systems to drive the business. Capital or technology injection is good but insufficient for building sustainable businesses. There is a lot of focus by Govts, DFIs, finance institutions, faith-based organisations, educational institutes etc on the need to grow entrepreneurship in developing countries but how much help are businesses getting on how to grow sustainable organisations? The People Problem is arguably the biggest challenge faced by business owners and founders. The challenge of people attraction, maximization and retention has multiplied with the increase in talent emigration overseas, popularly called the Japa syndrome. To grow our economy, we need more sustainably built businesses. To grow sustainable owner-led businesses we need to build systems that attract, maximise and retain people.
